Girl Scouts Welcome a New Cookie into the Fold
Girl Scouts is a community organization that supports the development and interests of girls. They are not part of the Boy Scouts today, although they were an offshoot at one time. They stand on their own, providing opportunities to promote leaders among girls and young women. This year, along with new uniforms, the Girl Scouts are also coming out with a new cookie.
Girl Scouts started selling cookies in Philadelphia in the 1930s. Sales were so successful, that soon other councils in the area were selling cookies. New York then took up the cookie sale idea, and soon selling cookies spread to all councils. Girl Scouts are limited in the ways they can make money for their troops to make sure Girl Scout policies are followed. Selling cookies is one of the few ways open to a Girl Scout Group to earn money.
While Girl Scout Troops have sold cookies for a long time, Daisy Troops did not sell cookies because they sold calendars instead. However, Daisy Troops are quite busy these days and need money for activities, too. So now, all levels of Girl Scouts sell cookies each year.
