Grandpa Joe was a stalwart protector of Charlie Bucket in the original film, sacrificing and finding ways to make the rough world give a little back to Charlie Bucket, his grandson. Jack Albertson played the role magnificently, and he won many awards over his acting career before passing away.

Albertson died from cancer at the beginning of the 1980s at age 74.
